    chapped lips

It seems like there’s never a season when you’re safe from chapped lips. Cold weather and dry, indoor heat in the winter wreak havoc on your lips while sun, salt water and hot weather are equally damaging during the summer months. What’s a girl (or guy) to do? With a little upkeep it’s easy to avoid dry, chapped lips all year round:

Lips don’t stand a chance against the elements, certain lifestyle factors and - least of all - neglect.

First, avoid licking your lips, even though it’ll feel like the most natural thing to do when they’re dry. It just dries them out! If you have a lip balm handy at all times, you won’t ever get stuck licking your lips.

Which leads to our revelation of the easiest weapon to battle chapped lips -- a moisturizing lip balm -- or three -- with the most emollient textures possible. Keep one with you at all times and make sure to apply it all day long, including before bed (but after you brush your teeth) when you won’t have another chance to re-apply it for several hours.

If you’re lips are already chapping, gently exfoliate away dead, flaky skin so that the balm can really do its work on the chapped skin underneath. Do it with a wash towel in the shower when the dry skin is softened so that it doesn’t tear and create more cracks and wounds on your lips.

For more serious sores and cracked mouth corners, use a medicated balm with healing ingredients like Labello SOS balm. (However, if lip sores or cracks persist, see your dermatologist.)

With diligent application, a bit of will power to avoid licking your lips and the right tools -- especially a good lip balm -- you should be sporting soft lips year around.
